University of Malaya (short for UM) is Malaysia’s premier Public Research University. It is located in the capital of Kuala Lumpur. It covers an area of 750 acres (309 hectares). There are many subject areas with world-class reputation. As the largest and most famous university in Malaysia, University of Malaysia is not only a member of the Asian University Alliance, but also an important academic member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), as well as a member of the Commonwealth Association of Universities.
The predecessor of the University of Malaya was the King Edward VII Medical College established in 1905 and the Raffles College established in 1929. They merged to form the University of Malaya on October 8, 1949. Together, they can provide greater services-helping to lay the foundations of a new nation by nurturing a generation of skilled and educated people. In 1973, the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Malaya and the Faculty of Agriculture of Malaya merged into the University of Agriculture of Malaysia (now: University of Putra Malaysia).
