It was founded in 1829 by King George IV and Prime Minister Duke of Wellington on the banks of the Thames in London. It is the founding school of the University of London. It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of European Universities and the Russell Group and other academic organizations. King's College is often regarded as part of the "Golden Triangle" of universities located in cities such as Oxford, Cambridge and London.
King's University is one of the oldest universities in England. In 1836, King's College became one of the two founding colleges of the University of London. In the late 20th century, King's grew through a series of mergers, including with Queen Elizabeth College and Chelsea Institute of Technology (1985), Institute of Psychiatry (1997), Guy's and St Thomas Hospital, and Florence Nandinger College of Nursing and Midwifery (1998).
King's College has five campuses: the historic Strand campus in central London, the other three Thames campuses nearby (Guy, St Thomas and Waterloo) and one in Danish Hill in south London. It also opened a professional military education institution in Shrevenham and an information service center in Newquay, Cornwall. In 2019/20, King's' total revenue was 964.3 million pounds, of which 200.5 million pounds came from research grants and contracts. It has the fourth largest endowment fund of all universities in the UK and the largest endowment fund of all universities in London. In terms of total enrollment, it is the 12th largest university in the UK. Its academic activities are divided into nine colleges, which are subdivided into multiple departments, centers, and research departments.
King's has six medical research committee centers and is a founding member of King's Health Partners Academic Health Science Center, Francis Crick Institute and MedCity. It is the largest postgraduate and postgraduate medical teaching and biomedical research center in Europe. It includes the world's first nursing school, Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, based on the number of students.

Philosophy ranks eighth in the world[9], and law, medicine, politics, history, literature, and psychology are among the top 20 in the world. In addition, following the tradition of the school father, the Duke of Wellington, King's College London has the only warfare department in the UK university, and has trained a large number of senior military generals and diplomatic talents for the UK.

In 2021-22, KCL is ranked 35th in QS World University. From 2020 to 2021, THE World University is ranked 35th, U.S. News World University is ranked 34th, and Shanghairanking World University is ranked 47th in academic terms.
