Located in New Haven, Connecticut, Yale University (Yale) is a world-renowned private research university and the third oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Yale University is one of the 14 founding institutions of the American Association of Universities and a member of the prestigious Ivy League, which is one of the most famous higher education institutions in the United States.

Yale University was originally founded in 1701 by the British Puritan Congregational Church of Connecticut, and moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 1716. As one of the most influential private universities in the United States, Yale University is the third oldest higher education institution established in the history of the United States. Its undergraduate school is as famous as Harvard University and Princeton University. Yale University’s central campus covers 260 acres and includes buildings from the mid-18th century. The university is divided into 14 colleges: Original Academy of Sciences, Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and 12 professional colleges.

About Undergraduate:

Different from other American institutions, undergraduate learning is initially characterized by the diversity of disciplines and methods, and in the following years, it focuses on a major course or department.

Yale University offers more than 70 possible majors that students choose at the beginning of their sophomore year, ranging from science to art subjects, from physics or applied mathematics to classics, art, or African American studies.

Like all the best universities, undergraduate admissions at Yale University is not easy. In 2016, Yale University accepted 1,972 students from 31,455 applicants into the class of 2020, with an acceptance rate of 6.27%. Half of the university’s current undergraduates are women, and nearly 40% are from ethnic minorities in the United States. Another 10.5% are international students.

Yale adopts a boarding college system, which imitates the college systems of Oxford and Cambridge in organization. However, unlike its British counterparts, Yale University has limited autonomy and does not include any colleges or research departments. All undergraduates are assigned to a university before the freshman year.

The application process is robust but fairly standard: all applicants have completed a joint application or general application, as well as specific questions from Yale University, or a matching application for Questbridge National Universities. Other requirements for freshman applicants include two teacher recommendation letters, one school counselor recommendation letter, one school report (including transcripts), one mid-year report, standardized test scores (SAT oral, math and writing, and ACT comprehensive). The interview is not a required part of the process, but applicants are encouraged to meet and talk with alumni as much as possible.

It is never cheap to accept teaching at some of the top universities available, and the estimated cost of attendance for undergraduates at Yale University is $72,100 per academic year. This includes tuition and fees, room and board, books and expenses.

Fortunately, financial aid is available, and the college promises to pay 100% of the financial needs. Families with a total annual income of less than US$65,000 are not expected to contribute to their children’s Yale education, and Yale University’s need-based financial plan averages US$49,575 per year.

International students follow the same procedures and have the same application requirements as other students. However, students whose native language is not English must take standardized English tests such as TOEFL, IELTS or PTE.

About Postgraduate:

Every year, the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences enrolls approximately 450 world-leading scholars into its graduate programs. Yale University is the first graduate school in the United States to award doctoral degrees, with 85% of its students pursuing doctoral degrees. The school is divided into four departments: humanities, social sciences, biological sciences, and physical sciences. It manages 73 degree-granting programs, of which 56 are doctorates and 19 are master's degrees.

Yale is well-known for its teaching quality and extensive academic resources and services. The acceptance rate in 2017 was 12.7%, and the competition for places was fierce.

The application is submitted online, and the general requirements are a bachelor's degree (or equivalent), a statement of purpose, university transcripts, standardized test results, three letters of recommendation, and a $105 application fee.

Different courses or required supporting materials may also have special admission requirements. International applicants may also need to provide a test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score, which can replace the IELTS score.

The tuition for most full-time study programs at Yale University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is currently $41,000. However, no doctoral student actually pays any tuition because it is either paid for by tuition scholarships from the graduate school, research grants or national and international scholarships.

One of the reasons why Yale is so popular with graduate students is the support that Yale provides to doctoral students, starting with excellent financial aid. Each PhD student can receive an allowance of up to US$35,150 per year to help them pay for their living expenses. This number is very competitive compared with rival universities, but New Haven’s relatively low cost of living makes Yale University’s allowance more favorable.

Support is the slogan of Yale University's graduate study. Graduate students not only receive generous financial support, but also strongly support their professional development through the Career Strategy Office and Teaching Center, which helps graduate students learn how to become better teachers. However, students at Yale University teach far less than other institutions. In six years, PhD students as part of the training spent no more than 14% of their teaching time, and for many people it was much less.
